Clearing Clutter = Indoor Gardening

Updated: May 22, 2023

If your counters and closets are full of clutter, it's time to weed!

On a recent call with a dear client-friend, we likened picking up clutter to weeding.

We both love gardening and the feeling of a newly weeded patch, so we decided to think about clearing clutter as indoor gardening...suddenly picking up around the house became more fun!

As the outdoor gardening season winds down, we may have more time, focus and energy for indoor gardening.

Something to remember for maximum garden enjoyment is to pick an area and clear the clutter from only that area.

Imagine a garden where you walk around picking a weed here and a weed there vs. picking ALL the weeds from one area - which looks and feels more gratifying?

Inside, if we pick up something here, pick something else up there, set something over there, move something to from there to here...we'll likely find ourselves tired, but our homes looking like nothing was done.

Because nothing was DONE, as in finished.

It takes focus to see results, which is a challenge, right?! When helping clients declutter and organize, a large part of my job is keeping them focused.

To stay focused and get results with indoor weeding:
  • Choose a small area

  • Make decisions about EVERY SINGLE ITEM in that area (garbage? recycling? wash? donate? put away?)

  • DO NOT LEAVE the area until EVERYTHING in that area is clear.

  • Wipe down or vaccuum that area when you're done

When you're done, organize what you decide to keep in that area in a pleasing way (it's like arranging flowers or choosing where to plant something in your garden!)

For more tips on how to stay focused and actually finish the things you start, see my post My Top 5 Tips to Clear & Organize.

Happy Gardening! And remember to share your before and after photos, questions and ideas in the TidyWild Facebook group!
